James G. Blaine, the Republican presidential candidate in 1884, selected John A. Logan as his running mate for the vice presidency. Logan, who was a senator from Illinois, had a long record of supporting the Republican Party's platform of protectionism and civil rights.

In the 1880s, there was growing sentiment against Chinese immigration in the United States, particularly on the West Coast. Some labor groups and politicians believed that Chinese immigrants were taking jobs away from American workers and depressing wages. This led to the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, which prohibited Chinese immigrants from coming to the United States.

Despite this, Logan was known for his opposition to anti-Chinese legislation. He believed that the Chinese Exclusion Act was unconstitutional and violated the principles of equality and justice that America was founded on. Logan also argued that the Chinese immigrants were hardworking and contributed to the country's economy.

Logan's views on Chinese immigration put him at odds with some members of his own party, including Blaine. Blaine had previously supported the Chinese Exclusion Act and was not sympathetic to the Chinese immigrants' plight. Nevertheless, Logan remained steadfast in his position, even when it was unpopular within his party.

In the end, the Republican ticket of Blaine and Logan was defeated by the Democratic candidate, Grover Cleveland. Although Logan's views on Chinese immigration did not gain widespread support at the time, his advocacy for civil rights and opposition to discrimination helped pave the way for future legislation that would protect the right s of all Americans, regardless of race or ethnicity.
