John Gardiner (1771–1816) of Gardiner’s Island in New York was known for his involvement in maritime trade, including the China trade. He is often associated with other prominent American families and merchants who established early trade relations with China after the American Revolution. Many New York and New England merchants participated in these ventures, benefiting greatly from the lucrative trade routes.
Although the Gardiners were not among the largest players like the Perkins or Astor families, they played a role in this trans-Pacific trade that contributed to the growth of American wealth and influence during that period.
